Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Beginner Guide — Combat, Puzzles & Collectible Pitfalls
Last verified: 2026-09-10 · Game version: Launch

This game's pacing is completely different from the first two: stealth is no longer the focus, and the combat intensity is noticeably higher from the start. This guide compresses the essentials into one line: survive first, get stronger, then collect everything.
First Things First: This Is an Action Game
- Combat: the Kick is an underrated godsend — the second kick can push non-staggered enemies, and near cliffs or hazards it's an instant kill
- Parry: yellow attacks can be parried, red attacks must be dodged at first (red becomes parryable after Aegean Deflect mastery)
- Focus Attack: unlocked automatically, no skill points. Attacks/parries/dodges build the Focus Gauge; when full, unleash a wide sweep — it pays off most when surrounded, don't save it for bosses
- The "hug the edge and sneak" style of the first two games doesn't work here — head-on combat is the designed main course
Skills: Unlock These Two First
The skill currency is Resonance Points (glowing orange shell-like collectibles + some automatic story-battle rewards). There are 200 points in total; maxing every skill needs only 165, so there's plenty of buffer.
Beginner priority:
- Hero's Step: double-tap dodge for a second dodge with i-frames — a survival game-changer (best for beginners)
- Aegean Deflect: perfect-parry stagger damage doubled; mastery lets you parry red attacks — a game-changer vs Brutes
Tip: you can respec for free anytime in the Skills menu, so don't stress about mistakes.
⚠️ Two traps to know up front:
- Points don't carry over via chapter select; replaying an earlier chapter resets the total to what it was then
- Dying loses the points you collected since the last checkpoint
Puzzles: The General Light-Puzzle Method
Every Hero Tomb light puzzle in the game shares the same routine:
- Find the green gem — always on the main statue or pillar base
- Find the marked standing platform / metal ring on the ground — basically your designated spot
- Lock the base beam onto the green gem first, then rotate to align the red/blue beams to their targets
- All three lit → the tomb door opens
Collecting: When to Get What
| Collectible | Count | Advice |
|---|---|---|
| Charms | 30 | Chapter select exists, all collectible retroactively — clean up after the credits |
| Blades | 8 | 2 from the story, 6 in Hero Tomb puzzles; score 1 kill with each new blade immediately (Adaptable needs 1 kill per blade, including the Rusty Sword) |
| Resonance Points | 200 | Cannot be topped up via chapter select — grab every one you see, don't save them for later |
Chapter 1 Blood Ties and Chapter 8 Resonance have no collectibles at all — just play through.
Three Opening Tips
- Don't hoard your focus gauge: use it when surrounded — Focus Attack recharges fast
- Drop the parry muscle memory when characters switch: in Theseus flashback fights, Sophia's upgrades don't carry over and red-attack parry is unavailable — dodge first to learn the rhythm
- Take the first 3 chapters slow: the community consensus is that the opening is slow-paced, and combat/story only fully open up after Chapter 3 — give it a little patience
